Insect bangle

I used a different kind of wax to cats the bands from this time, as the paraffin wax was far too brittle.  This is a type of modelling wax with beeswax in, so is far more flexible.  However, this is the only band that worked out, as the other ones still snapped :( It had to be a bangle instead of a ring as there was no way the wax was going to bend enough.

wax casts

Wax casts of the clay flies in the post below.  The top image shows how they looked when they came out of the mold, the next two have had graphite powder brushed onto them, giving them metallic sheen.  I tried heating up one of the casts earlier, but unfortunately this paraffin wax doesn't seem to be flexible enough, and it snapped, so when I get the chance I might try again with beeswax or something similar.

model clay flies

Spent hours modelling flies on thin bands of clay which will eventually (hopefully) resemble something of the ring designs in the post further down this page called 'fly'.  I plan to cover these models in vinamold (silicone rubber that sets and keeps the model's shape), pick out the clay, then cast wax versions which will be flexible so can be bent round to form rings (or bangles if they turn out to be just a bit too big).

Fly

Images from my sketchbook from our current project based on insects.

Ilmington

I made this a few weeks ago as a birthday present for my dad.  I'd been looking at contour maps and using a scalpel to make 3D models out of flat paper in my project at uni, so decided to continue the theme.  I'd also seen a picture on the internet of how to make a simple pyramid box, I thought it made it special.  The map is the area surrounding out village, all the names of the villages are written on the back.
